BAPG/ASCE January Meeting

Collage of Erie Canal Projects

Speakers:
Greg Johnson, PE, Bergmann Associates
Michael Mann, PE, McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineering and Geology, P.C.

Overview

The New York State Canal system was originally constructed in the early 1800’s and was expanded into the Erie Barge Canal in the early 1900’s. This presentation looks at the history of the Canal which was considered to be an impressive engineering feat of its time, and how the geology and bedrock played a part in its construction. Three sites in particular are reviewed: Culvert 125 in Lockport, a spillway and waste weir in Albion, and Lock 0-7 along the Oswego Canal. Each site presented a unique set of challenges pertaining to the deterioration of existing structures, localized geology, and developing cost-effective solutions. Historical figures and photographs are presented along with portions of the rehabilitation drawings and the photographs during construction.
