Overview

The Rainbow Bridge (international crossing located between Niagara Falls, NY and Niagara Falls, Ontario) is the signature tourist crossing between Niagara Falls, NY and Niagara Falls, Ontario. The historic 80 year old steel arch bridge underwent a rehabilitation project in 2018 that included replacing all “breather” joints on the bridge with Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) link slabs. 

The presentation includes a general overview of the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission (NFBC), NFBC assets overview, Rainbow Bridge overview, need to rehabilitate the “breather” joints on the Rainbow Bridge, options for rehabilitation, benefits and properties of UHPC, design consideration for use of UHPC, design theory for UHPC, design details and construction considerations and logistics.

Course objective is impart to the audience the theory, design consideration, use and benefits of Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) for use in elimination of bridge deck joints.
