Scour Risk Mitigation: Pile Retrofit of I-88 Bridges over Schoharie Creek

Overview

Observed scour at two bridges carrying I-88 EB and I-88 WB over Schoharie Creek raised concerns over the stability of the existing spread footing piers. This presentation will discuss the observed scour, the implemented monitoring protocol, and the design and construction of a pile supported pier foundation retrofit.

Speaker Bio

Kelly Schuman is a Project Engineer with the New York State Department of Transportation’s Structure Design Bureau. She has over 10 years of experience as a structural design engineer with expertise in bridge rehabilitation and replacement. Throughout her career she has worked on scoping, preliminary layout, design, plan preparation, and estimation for more than 50 bridges in New York State. Prior to working for the Department of Transportation, Kelly worked in the telecommunications industry analyzing hundreds of tower structures in 40+ states across the country. Kelly received her B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University in 2009 and her M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University at Buffalo in 2011. She is a licensed professional engineer in New York and California.
