Overview

The wave action of Lake Erie onto Route 5 in Athol Springs, which sees over 40,000 vehicles per day traveling between Buffalo and the Southtowns, launched water, ice, and debris on the roadway for years, presenting hazardous conditions to motorists. With the existing seawall crumbling after decades of abuse, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, partnered with the New York State Department of Transportation, designed and constructed a new shoreline protection system. The project consisted of a 1,325 linear foot armor stone revetment made up of 3 foot diameter boulders to absorb the wave action, along with an 15 foot splash apron that doubles as a pedestrian pathway to encourage public access in milder weather.

This presentation will focus on the coastal, civil, and structural design of the revetment as well as the construction of the project.
